SURREAL Granola Review: A No-Nonsense, High-Protein Breakfast (Or Anytime) Fix

I don't naturally gravitate towards protein-rich food, I never have. Left to my own devices, I could quite happily go a whole day without hitting anything close to a sensible protein target, which means, I need to make conscious decisions to eat things that actually help rather than just fill a gap. SURREAL Granola has become one of the easiest ways I've found to do that, and despite the name of this article, it's not even really just breakfast food for me… it’s an any-time-of-the-day delight.

What SURREAL actually is

For anyone who hasn't come across it, SURREAL is a UK brand making high-protein, plant-based cereal and granola, built around the idea that "healthy" breakfast food doesn't have to taste like cardboard and dust. It's designed to hit the same nostalgic, comforting notes as classic childhood cereals, just with a very different nutritional profile behind it. Everything in the range is vegan and gluten free, and the granola specifically leans into keeping sugar content super low, without leaning on it for flavour the way a lot of traditional granola does.

Why the Granola specifically

I go for the Granola over their cereal range because of how I actually eat it; mixed with fruit and yoghurt, rather than just milk. The texture is what sells it for me: proper crunch, not the soft, slightly soggy thing a lot of "healthy" granola turns into within a couple of minutes.

The protein content is the real reason it's stuck around in my kitchen, though. Getting a solid dose of protein, without having to think about it or plan it, takes one decision off the table on days when executive functioning is offline. And the very low sugar content matters to me too! It's nice knowing that what's keeping me full is protein and fibre, not a sugar hit that leaves me hungry again an hour later. It’s worth mentioning that SURREAL Granola is available in a bunch of different flavours and they’re all pretty delish.

Why it's not just for breakfast

Here's the bit I actually want to make clear: I don't set an alarm early enough to be having a thoughtful breakfast moment before training. Realistically, I'm slammed between work meetings, chasing my toddler round the house, or trying to get something in before the day runs away with me entirely, and SURREAL Granola fits into all of that far better than it fits into some Instagram-worthy sit-down breakfast fantasy that doesn't exist in my house.

It takes about thirty seconds to throw together with fruit and yoghurt, which makes it just as good mid-morning, as an afternoon "I haven't eaten and I have a call in five minutes" rescue, or genuinely whenever hunger strikes and I need something that isn't going to leave me hungry again twenty minutes later. Tasty, protein-rich, and, for me, at least, properly time-efficient. That last one matters more than people give it credit for!

Would I recommend it

If you're someone who, like me, doesn't naturally reach for protein-rich food and needs a bit of a nudge to hit your targets, SURREAL Granola is one of the easier ways I've found to do that without it feeling like a chore. Nearly no sugar, proper crunch, and enough protein to make a genuine difference, whatever time of day life actually lets you eat it.
